Android keeps separate volume levels so a quiet video does not mean a quiet alarm. Here is what each does.

The four sliders

  • Media: music, videos, games.
  • Ringtone: incoming calls.
  • Notifications: message and app alerts.
  • Alarm: alarm clock apps.

Find them in Settings → Sound and vibration. You can also press a volume button and tap the three-dot or settings icon to expand all sliders.

A good night setup

  1. Set the Alarm slider to a level you can hear from across the room.
  2. Turn on Do Not Disturb on a schedule, for example 22:00 to 07:00.
  3. In its settings, confirm Alarms are allowed. Leave calls and messages silenced, or add only your favourite contacts.
  4. Consider a bedtime mode if your phone has one; it combines Do Not Disturb with a dimmed screen.

Gentle versus loud

A rising volume helps you wake without a shock. If you tend to sleep through, choose a louder tone and avoid the snooze button. More ideas in waking up more easily.

If an alarm still fails, work through the alarm-not-ringing checklist.

Frequently asked questions

Can I silence calls at night but keep my alarm?

Yes. Turn on Do Not Disturb and allow alarms as an exception. Calls and messages stay quiet, the alarm still sounds.

Why is my alarm quiet when media volume is high?

Alarm volume is its own slider. Raising media volume does not change it.

Do headphones change where the alarm plays?

On many phones the alarm plays through the speaker even if headphones are connected, but behaviour differs. Disconnect headphones at night to be sure.
