How to set reminders you will actually act on

Reminder design that works: one clear action, a trigger you cannot miss and the right lead time, plus Android settings that keep reminders reliable.

A reminder only works if it reaches you at a moment you can act on it.

Write the action, not the topic

  • Weak: “Mum”.
  • Better: “Call Mum about Sunday lunch”.

Start with a verb. It should be obvious what to do without opening anything else.

Match the trigger to the situation

  • Time-based for appointments and deadlines.
  • Repeating for habits: medicine, bills, weekly review.
  • Early plus final: one reminder with lead time, one close to the moment.

Keep the number small

If every task has an alert, none stands out. Reserve reminders for things that have a time or a consequence. Everything else belongs on a list you review daily.

Make them reliable on Android

  • Allow notifications for your planner or calendar app.
  • Remove it from battery optimisation (set to Unrestricted).
  • On Android 12 and later, enable Alarms & reminders under special app access.
  • Keep Do Not Disturb exceptions for reminders you cannot miss.

For a full weekly system, see time blocking with a calendar app.

Frequently asked questions

Why do I ignore my reminders?

Vague wording, too many alerts and bad timing. A reminder with a clear action at the moment you can act is far more effective.

How early should a reminder fire?

For travel, include the journey time. For a deadline, set one reminder a day or two before and one near the time.

Why are my reminders late on Android?

Battery optimisation and missing notification or exact-alarm permissions can delay them. Check those in Settings.
