This is general information. Rules and amounts change, so always confirm on GOV.UK, the UK government’s official site.

What it is

Universal Credit is a monthly payment for people in the UK on a low income or out of work. It replaced several older benefits. It can include amounts for housing costs, children, disability or caring, depending on your circumstances.

How to apply

  1. Go to gov.uk/universal-credit and create an account. It is free.
  2. Have ready ID details, bank details, housing information and your income and savings details.
  3. Complete the online claim and follow the instructions for your identity interview.
  4. Use your online account (the “journal”) to report changes and message your work coach.

How payment works

  • It is assessed in monthly assessment periods. Your income during the period changes the amount.
  • The first payment typically arrives about five weeks after you claim. An advance can help, but it is repaid from later payments.

Staying safe

  • Only use GOV.UK for claims. Third-party sites that charge a fee are not official.
  • DWP will not text you asking for bank details or passwords.
  • Report scams as described in our guide to checking benefit information.
