On this page

Some apps collect general information about government benefits, loan calculations or utility bills. They are guides, not official services.

What these apps cannot do

  • They cannot apply for a benefit, approve a claim or move money for you.
  • They cannot see your official account.
  • Rules and amounts change. A guide can be out of date.

How to verify

  1. Find the official government or provider website yourself. Do not follow a link inside an app to enter personal details.
  2. Compare any figure, date or eligibility rule against that site.
  3. Never pay a fee to “unlock” a benefit. Official applications are normally free.
  4. Never share bank details, national ID numbers or passwords with an information app.

Frequently asked questions

Can a benefits information app apply for me?

No. Only the official government service can accept your application and see your claim.

Should I ever pay to unlock a benefit?

No. Official applications are normally free. A request for payment is a scam warning sign.

How do I find the real website?

Type the agency's name into your browser yourself and look for official domain endings such as .gov, .gov.uk or .gob.mx. Do not follow links inside unknown apps.
